GOD, I hope there's somebody still around here! |

I just got back from the hospital, and Jan isn't doing well at all. Over the last year, she's lost the use of her legs and hands, and for the last few
months, she's been getting weaker and weaker. This afternoon, I finally managed to mover her out of her wheelchair, and found a HUGE bedsore on her
backside, which she'd been hiding from me. I called EMS and got her to the hospital, where she was finally admitted at about 1AM. Contrary to what her
doctors have been telling us for months, the Doc at the hospital thinks it might be Lou Gehrigs disease. She took it well, but I'm sitting here at home
bawling like a damn baby. After 35 years, I can't sleep without her here, and I was just getting in the way at the hospital. I have to be here tomprrow
because there's a medical hoist being delivered here that I ordered about a week ago, and I have to get the house ready for her to come home (soon, I
hope). Thank God we still have medical insurance! I've been unemployed for just over a year now, mainly because I've been taking care of her, hoping
she would get better. We've always been close, but the last year we've been basically in the same room 24/7. At least she'll get some sleep
tonight, as they sedated her. Tomorrow they decide if she'll need skin grafts or not.

Well, we finally got some answers. Jan has spinal stenosis, which means that her spinal canal has been narrowing, pinching off her spinal cord, which resulted
in near total
paralysis from the neck down. They will need to do surgery on her backside before they can do the spinal surgery, but before that they have to do a colostomy so her wounds won't get contaminated. The docs estimate two to three months in the hospital, followed by a long convalescence as an outpatient. The good news is that she'll recover most of the mobility in her arms and hands, but might be in a wheelchair for life. |

That sounds like good news compared to the many other possibilities. I wish her well and hope for a full recovery.

Good luck with this procedure tomorrow. I hope it is the beginning of all good things to come out of this.
